Then sit down with Suzy and Bob to a hearty meal, a creative take on Belgian cuisine, that will be served either indoors or at any of Suzy's many outdoor dining locations, depending on the time of day and season. Your meal will start with appetizers like a variety of pestos with homemade bread followed by a seasonal first course like maatjes (salted herring) or white asparagus a la Flamande (only available in May and June and sourced from a farm in Holland) and a fresh salad or soup. This is followed by a main course which includes a fish or meat dish that Suzy procures from a butcher that raises his own cattle accompanied by fresh a seasonal vegetable side and homemade bread. You might try Ghent Waterzooi (creamy chicken stew), vol au vent (chicken and mushrooms in a bechamel sauce), fish or steak for a main. You can expect Suzy's dishes to have a wonderful touch of spices and fresh garden herbs. Your Belgian meal will conclude with homemade ice-cream or Belgian chocolate mousse. In summer you can expect a fresh dessert with fruit from the garden or from a local farm. More about Suzy

Suzy is an incredibly warm, wonderful and delightful host with a lovely sense of humor. She is also a creative cook who makes her own sambal with peppers from the garden as well as ketchup, quince jelly and apricot and rhubarb jams. Her home (which is the house she was raised in) is a beautiful and peaceful haven filled with beautiful Flemish art inherited from her family and surrounded by gorgeous rambling gardens. Suzy learned to cook through experimentation and from her mother who was a great cook. Suzy's favorite memories of growing up always involve the dinner table, where she remembers enjoying healthy, delicious food and delightful conversations with family. She is now excited to create new memories over food, hosting travelers and engaging conversation at her table. Suzy is particular about cooking with high quality ingredients - she gets her meat from a local butcher that personally sources from a local farm. A retired high school teacher, Suzy hosts along with her husband, Bob, who is a genetics professor at the university. In her retirement, Suzy presides over social organizations, travels a lot and is currently taking art lessons at the Academy of Fine Art.

"Dinner with Suzy was so lovely! Exceeded all my expectations. Suzy was so welcoming and made me and my friends feel at home. She had prepped portions of the meal ahead of time and we still had plenty of hands-on experience with cooking the food. She was easy to talk to, and it was nice to connect over drinks and an appetizer part way through cooking the main meal. We learned about ingredients that are predominantly found in Belgium. For dessert, we had pears that she jarred herself with a delicious chocolate and cream sauce on top. Her husband, Bob, joined for the meal and he is equally as wonderful as she is! They shared about their experiences living in Belgium. It was so great to be able to ask questions about the area and their time living there. There was much laughter around the table! I was able to keep the recipes to try and recreate them back in the States. I would highly recommend dinner with Suzy and look forward to dinner again next time I am in Belgium!"

"Spending an evening with Suzy and Bob was like spending an evening with good friends. Suzy is a warm and natural presence. Her home is so comfortable! We made (well, in fairness Suzy made; I cut up a few vegetables) several Belgium classics: a tomato with tiny gray shrimp from the North Sea and a homemade aioli sauce; the freshest tasting pea soup imaginable; salmon steamed with leeks and carrots; mashed potatoes with sorrel and cauliflower. The food was deceptively simple and absolutely delicious. Suzy: thank you for a wonderful introduction to Belgium. If you are ever my way, I hope to return the favor."

"Suzy is so charming and we had an absolutely wonderful time spending an evening in a Belgium home with Suzy and Bob. The food was delicious and we learned new techniques of how to prepare meals. Bob and Suzy are adorable and it was fascinating to hear of stories about Belgium during World War II and just the everyday life of Belgium. The house and grounds are wonderful and Suzy uses all of the gardens and areas to entertain. It was a fabulous time."
