More about Erna

Erna and her husband, Thanos, live in a seaside village, Epanomi, outside of Thessaloniki and both share a common passion for food and hospitality. Erna is a native Austrian and has been living in Greece, where she moved after marrying Thanos, for the past 30 years. Erna first learned to cook in school, where cooking classes were part of the curriculum, and she developed a passion that started in the classroom and traveled home, where she fondly remembers recreating dishes learned at school for her family. Erna's in-laws were both professional cooks and she learned traditional Greek cooking from them. She knew she couldn’t compete with their professional cooking skills, so she started to innovate and create her own dishes, which are traditional Greek recipes with an Austrian twist!

From Erna, “We like to please people through their taste buds which always leads to interesting conversations, sharing a good glass of wine and having a good time.”

"This was a fabulous experience, such fun and such a wonderful couple. The food we made was fabulous, Tzatziki, Eggplant salad, Baked Feta, Lamb kebab, prawns with sweet chili sauce, Swiss chard, and creamy Greek yoghurt with apricots….also a cocktail with Martina, made with resin…. I am traveling by my self and they did not act like this was at all unusual…so if you are a solo traveler you’ll be made to feel so welcome. And it is so nice to actually visits someone’s home."

"Writing a review for this experience feels like a gift. Because what a special, warm and wonderful evening this was! From the moment you step into Erna and Thanos's house you feel welcome. Their beautiful home exudes personality, filled with art, stories and memories from traveling through Europe and beyond. The atmosphere is homely and genuinely cozy — like you're sitting with good friends. Erna is a wonderful hostess and cooking instructor. Everything she serves is homemade, including the fresh bread still warm from the oven. She loves to share her knowledge about cooking, ingredients and combinations — and does so in a relaxed, accessible way. Thanos really knows how to get everything perfectly seasoned and cooked. Together they bring their Austrian and Greek roots to life in original, tasty dishes that you will talk about for a long time. This cooking class is not only educational, but above all an experience that touches you — thanks to the lovely people, the delicious flavours and the warm atmosphere. Nothing is too much to ask and everything feels like a party. An absolute must for anyone looking for an authentic, personal and delicious cooking experience. "My husband and I traveled to Greece for three weeks and we wanted to experience an authentic home cooked meal with a local. Luckily I stumbled across this website. From the moment we booked with Erna we knew the experience was going to be amazing and we were so excited. We we warmly welcomed by Erna and Thanos and their fabulous children and partners. We could not of hoped for a more sublime lunch. The food was exceptional. It was the most authentic food that we had over our 3 weeks in Greece. We had many laughs over a very long lunch and will be forever grateful for this opportunity to share a meal in there home. We were sad to leave! If you are lucky enough to share a meal in there home you will have new friendships to treasure."
