Min 1, max 6 guests
Start times: 1:00pm, 7:00pm
Your culinary experience takes place in Almada, just a quick 7-minute ferry ride from downtown Lisbon. Paula will meet you at the ferry and guide you on a short walk through town to her home, where you’ll be welcomed with a glass of Portuguese wine from a historic 200-year-old Alentejo winery. (If you’re traveling south, Paula can even recommend a visit to this award-winning vineyard and underground cellar.) Begin with appetizers that showcase both traditional Portuguese cuisine and Goan flavors shaped by Portugal’s history. Sample pataniscas de bacalhau (classic Portuguese cod fritters) alongside Goan gram flour fritters, while Paula shares the cultural stories behind each dish. Then gather around Paula’s table for a family-style meal featuring a mix of Portuguese and Goan specialties. Depending on your preference, your menu might highlight Portuguese favorites, or a Goan-focused feast with dishes such as rich crab curry. The experience concludes with a sweet dessert and coffee or tea.

More about Paula

Born into a Goan family with roots in Goa, Mozambique, and Portugal, Paula is a true reflection of the cultural diversity woven into Portuguese cuisine. Her love for food began in childhood, inspired by her mother, a gifted home cook who often welcomed entire communities into their home. From traditional Portuguese dishes to Goan specialties like handmade samosas, Paula learned both the flavors and the hospitality that define her cooking today. When her mother passed away, friends who missed her cooking turned to Paula, encouraging her to continue the family tradition. This led Paula into a second career in food, where she began recreating beloved Portuguese and Goan recipes. After training in cake design, she also discovered a passion for baking and opened her own cake studio, creating intricate cakes alongside her catering work. Today, Paula welcomes guests into her Lisbon-area home to share authentic Portuguese meals with Goan influence. A true artist with food, she brings warmth, creativity, and cultural depth to every dish, helping travelers experience both Portuguese cuisine and everyday local life in a meaningful way.

"This was great - you need to do this!! Paula met us at the ferry and then we went to the market and stores to pick up our food and then went back to her apartment to cook. She was so good with the kids and made sure we were all included. The food turned out amazing and even my kids ate! Hearing her story was so great and we loved it !"

"My partner and I took the evening cooking class and we loved the recipes! Our favorite was an absolutely incredible Goan shellfish dish. And we left knowing how to make our own pasteis de nata—at home!! Paula is so welcoming and communicates very well. We learned so much. We'll definitely do it again! Thank you, Paula!"

"The class was an enjoyable cultural experience. However, the host’s kitchen was cluttered and noticeably unclean, which made it difficult for our group of four to feel comfortable and stay focused on cooking. We’ve taken many cooking classes during our travels and appreciate the charm of small, authentic spaces but they always maintained the basic standard of cleanliness - essential in a cooking class. This one unfortunately fell short in that regard. Despite that, we focused on making the most of the class and learned traditional recipes, especially the dessert, Farófias, which was fun to make.
Traveling Spoon Review Response
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re so glad you enjoyed the cultural and culinary aspects of the class, and we truly appreciate your comments about the cleanliness of the space. We understand that your experience did not meet the high standards we set for all Traveling Spoon experiences. We spoke with your host Paula and were informed that this was an isolated situation - your host recently had to move unexpectedly to a smaller temporary apartment, which led to some clutter while she transitions to her new home. She has assured us that she is already in the process of moving and that her new space will allow her to return to the comfortable, organized environment she is known for. We’ve spoken directly with the host to ensure that all future guests enjoy the same warm hospitality and spotless conditions that are hallmarks of Traveling Spoon experiences. We truly appreciate your understanding and are delighted that you were still able to enjoy learning traditional recipes during your visit. Thank you again for taking the time to leave us a review and for sharing your feedback as we are always looking to improve."
