Join Albert and Bergthor for an authentic Icelandic cooking experience in their elegant Reykjavik apartment. This cooking demonstration (not a fully hands-on class) introduces you to classic Icelandic recipes with Albert, a trained cook. You’ll learn how to prepare a first course of either baked salmon with mustard-spiced leeks and breadcrumbs or traditional salted cod cured for 24 hours. You’ll also see how to make sykurbrúnadar kartöflur, Iceland’s famous caramelized potatoes, and a traditional dessert. After the demonstration, enjoy a three-course Icelandic meal with your hosts. Start with the fish dish you helped prepare, followed by “amma-style” roasted lamb from the mountains of Iceland, served with caramelized potatoes and a fresh seasonal salad. Dessert may be skyr terta, a creamy Icelandic yogurt cake, or Albert’s family recipe rhubarb “pie,” a local favorite he once baked daily in his coffee shop. End the experience with coffee and warm conversation in true Icelandic style.

More about Bergthor and Albert

Albert and Bergthor are an absolutely delightful couple living in central Reykjavik. Two art and music lovers, Bergthor is a professional opera singer who is also a talented artist - ask him to show you the original art that is the basis for the wall tapestry he created. Albert is the cook in the family, he went to culinary school and worked in restaurants for years before changing careers and becoming a professional hair stylist. Albert prepares beautiful dishes that are inspired by the traditional homestyle cooking he grew up with. Enjoy elegantly plated dishes in their apartment just off of Reykjavik's main shopping street. Albert might treat you to a singing performance on his beautiful grand piano! Ask about both of their amazing backgrounds - from Bergthor's book (a guide to etiquette) to Albert's museum that he created in northeastern Iceland on the history of French fisherman in Iceland.

"Bergthor and Albert were fantastic hosts and the food was 5-star quality to match. Seriously, the food was amazing! The apartment was beautiful and an easy walk from virtually anywhere downtown. We enjoyed lively conversation, sang songs, played games and learned a lot about Icelandic culture. My girlfiend and I had such a wonderful time that we hope to stay in touch and meet with Bergthor and Albert again. I would highly recommend this experience."
