An authentic South Indian vegetarian meal with Uma

During a 2 week vacation/business trip to Delhi we had an extra day without plans. Traveling Spoon, with 2 days notice, was able to connect us with a cooking/meal experience close to our hotel in Gurgaon. The experience was wonderful! The host, Uma Raghumanon, is both a teacher and a master chef. The opportunity to help prepare and have a meal in an Indian home is well worth the time away from the wonderful sights of Delhi.

Punjabi home-cooking in Gurgaon with Sudha (Dolly)

The moment Dolly opened the door and greeted me with a warm smile, I knew I was home. Her family is equally endearing and welcoming. The best part about this visit was how well Dolly's entire family made me feel at home. The lunch was a sumptuous spread of non-vegetarian as well as vegetarian dishes. and the kulfi (Indian ice cream) with mangoes became the perfect icing on the cake after the heavy meal.

Mughlai kitchen secrets in Gurgaon with Aditti

Aditti is a single parent and lives alone as both her children Hunar and Prapti are studying and living abroad. She grew up helping her grandmother in the kitchen, making simple meals for her family. She says every Punjabi loves parathas (flatbread), butter, ghee, lassi and is incapable of cooking in small quantities - so be ready to be well fed at her table! She’ll serve some of her family recipes such as dal makhni (slow cooked black lentils with kidney beans, butter and cream), mutton badami pasanda (goat curry with yogurt, cream and ground almonds), paneer lababdar (fresh cheese cooked in spicy tomato and cream sauce), kadai chicken (chicken and vegetables stir fried in a kadai, an Indian wok), a fresh salad and to end your meal, rose kulfi (frozen dairy dessert) or paan shot (a summer cooler made with pureed betel leaves).

We had a very memorable evening with Dhondys family. The food was delicious and flavourful. It was a pleasure to see the whole family dine with us. We really wish we had spent more time with them. Thank you so much for hosting us Nilufer!
